As we approach the new academic year at Eton Academy, we are excited to introduce one of our newest initiatives to strengthen inclusive practice: the SEND Observation Tool.
Developed by the SEND Department, this structured tool will be used during classroom walk-ins to help identify and support students with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND). It reflects our ongoing commitment to early identification, inclusive classrooms, and consistent, evidence-informed support for every learner.

What Is the SEND Observation Tool?
The SEND Observation Tool is a practical framework used by SENCOs and trained staff to observe students in real time. It helps flag potential indicators of SEND in areas such as learning, communication, emotional well-being, and engagement, particularly within Eton Academy’s unique online and hybrid learning environment.
It is built around four core observation domains:
S – Support: Emotional safety, scaffolding, and inclusive classroom climate
E – Engagement: Participation, communication, and responsiveness
N – Needs: Observable signs of learning difficulties or neurodivergence
D – Development: Evidence of progress, personalised support, and differentiation
This framework aligns with the Graduated Approach and the national SEND Code of Practice, while supporting tailored, reflective practice across our teaching team.
Why It Matters: Early Identification of SEND
The earlier we identify a student’s needs, the earlier we can offer meaningful support. This new tool helps staff consistently notice key behaviours that may signal a student is struggling, whether it's:
Avoiding participation in group activities
Difficulty processing or recalling information
Withdrawing emotionally or physically during lessons
Struggling with verbal expression or social cues
By documenting these observations, we create a clear picture that informs evidence-based decision-making, improves parent communication, and guides support plans or referrals.
Designed for Eton Academy’s Learning Model
Unlike generic observation checklists, this tool is tailored to our digital and blended classrooms. It includes indicators specific to online learning, such as:
Turning off the camera or mic frequently
Limited reaction to interactive content
Struggling with online collaboration
Sensory or fatigue-related behaviours in virtual sessions
These insights are particularly valuable for identifying hidden SEND needs that may otherwise go unnoticed in a digital environment.
A Whole-School Approach to Inclusive Education
The tool also fosters consistency across departments by giving all staff a shared language and framework for SEND observation and reflection. This supports joined-up planning, fair referrals, and clear tracking of each student’s progress, while building a school-wide culture of awareness and inclusion.
What Comes Next?
Starting this academic year, the SEND Observation Tool will be embedded into our regular classroom walk-ins, SEN monitoring, and quality assurance activities. It will also inform our ongoing work with:
IEPs and EHCP reviews
Parent consultations
Staff CPD focused on inclusive teaching strategies
Partnering with Parents
We encourage all parents and carers to engage with us if they have concerns or questions about their child’s progress. Our SEND awareness workshops, launching this term, are a great way to learn more about our tools and approach to supporting all learners.
At Eton Academy, inclusion isn’t an initiative; it’s a mindset. This new tool is one more way we’re putting that mindset into action.
