IGCSE stands for International General Certificate of Secondary Education. It is an English language examination level equivalent to GCSE, the standard qualification for 14 to 16 year olds in the UK.
Students are required to take multiple IGCSE qualifications simultaneously in a variety of core and optional subjects.
Completion of IGCSEs allow for students to progress to AS Levels and A Levels.
Eton Academy delivers Cambridge International IGCSEs. If a student has previously been studying the same IGCSEs, they can join Eton Academy halfway through their studies and quite easily transition to their new learning environment.
If a student has been undergoing GCSE/IGCSE studies on a different exam board, they will find the transition more difficult. Each exam board’s qualifications have slightly different course content, assessment methods and requirements, meaning that to gain a Cambridge International IGCSE at Eton Academy, students will have to independently catch up on and complete work they have missed by not being present at the start of the course.
Some subjects, such as Mathematics, have a lot of crossover between exam boards, so students might have the transferrable ability to catch up on a Cambridge International qualification in this subject. Other subjects, such as Business, are wide-ranging in what they can potentially include, meaning there may be no crossover between the course content the student had previously been required to study and what they must now know for their Cambridge International programme of study.
Another factor students must take into consideration is coursework. Some subjects have required coursework, such as essays, outside of formal examinations and students will have to complete all of these, including ones set before they joined Eton Academy.
Contact Eton Academy to discuss whether a move to Eton Academy halfway through the completion of your child’s IGCSEs is right for them.
Students do not sit their examinations as part of their Eton Academy schooling. Instead, Eton Academy fully prepares them for the exams.
Students must sit their examinations at an official examination centre local to them. Eton Academy will guide students in registering for these.
